Unicoco

Unicocois a Japanese contemporary artist based in Tokyo
who has started her career as an artist since 2008,
after graduating from Oita University Graduate School of Education,
and working as a high school teacher and welfare worker.

Three-dimensional works by Unicoco
that can be worn as if it is an extension of the body
are often exhibited in participatory installations,
and most of them are made of soft materials with various textures
such as wool felt, cloth, yarn, and Japanese paper.

Not only can viewers appreciate the works from the “outside''
that recall primitive magic, festival costumes,
strange creatures, and extensions of the body,
but sometimes they can pick up the work themselves
and place their own body inside the work.

Unicoco is thoroughly conscious of the exhibition
that viewers are able to experience her art from the “inside,”
getting inside the works.

For her, the act of creating art gives a sense of
salvation and power like a prayer does.

By accumulating daily acts,
the works gradually increase in bulk and are amassed.

According to her, her works are her own alter ego,
but at the same time, they also represent the invisible "something"
that everyone has.

It expresses the possibility that each person's souls gather together,
loosens the boundaries of themselves and others,
and generatgenerates greater energy.
