◇主語Sになれる要素
主語になれる要素は、次のような名詞に相当する語句です。

s、vは意味的な「主語+述語」の構造に於ける主語、述語

(1)名詞
The sun is rising. 太陽が昇っている。

(2)代名詞
It is a beautiful morning. 美しい朝だ。

(3)「the+形容詞」=「〜な人達」(複数扱い)

(4)「the+分詞」=「〜な人達」(複数扱い)
The known must be separated from the unknown. 既知のことは未知のことと区別しなくてはならない。

(5)to不定詞(名詞的用法)
To tell a lie is wrong. 嘘をつくのは悪いことだ。

文末重心の原理により、形式主語itを用いる構文の方が一般的です。

To be laughed at makes him angry. 人に笑われると彼は怒る。

(8)前置詞句(名詞句)
前置詞句を主語にとる動詞は、「be、suit」だけです。
Through the wood is the nearest way. 森を通って行くのが近道だ。

(9)wh語(疑問代名詞)、wh句(名詞句)
Who teaches you history? 君に歴史を教えるのは誰ですか。

Which is the cheaper of the two? 2つの中でどちらが安いのですか。

「the cheaper φ」=「the cheaper one」であることから、
cheaperを名詞として扱っているのでtheを付けています。
更に、「the cheaper」のtheは、或る1つの集合の中で、
theを付けて指示する部分を他の部分と対比するために
用いられています。
「the two」のtheは、或る共通の特性を持つ複数の要素から構成される
まとまりのある1つの集合体であることを意味します。

〃 ◇「the+名詞の複数形」=集合全体を意味する構成員の総和
を参照して下さい。
Which book is yours? どちらが君の本ですか。

How φ to begin is more difficult than where φ to stop. 何処で止めるかよりも如何に始めるかの方が難しい。

次の例では、whatが主語なのか主格補語なのかという判断は
聞き手に委ねられます。

くだけた言い方では、to不定詞がbe動詞の補語になる場合、
toが省略されます。
be動詞の直前にdoがある場合にこの傾向が顕著に現れます。
Whatever she cooks φ tastes sweet. 彼女が調理したものは何んでも美味しい。

(12)because節(名詞節)
接続詞becauseが導く節は、普通、理由・原因の副詞節ですが、
名詞節として主語に用いられる場合があります。
この場合のbecause節は、just、only、simply、chieflyなどの程度の副詞で
限定されることが多いです。
Just because you are older than me doesn't mean (that) you can tell me what to do.

彼は彼女が好きではないからといって、彼女をそんなにひどく扱ってよいという理由にはならない。
(13)非人称のit(虚辞)
非人称のitはthereと同じく虚辞expletiveです。
虚辞とは、
(a)時間・距離・天候・状況などを述べる文の主語に用いる「非人称のit」
(b)存在・出現などの自動詞と共に用いる「there」
などの語のことです。
虚辞は、現実世界に指示する対象物を持たないので、他動詞の目的語にはなり得ません。

It is just five o'clock. 丁度5時です。

尚、there構文の虚辞thereは主語ではありません。
