Special Lecture by Ms Gordon

Yuriko Uno, President of TEN, met Beate Sirota Gordon when she visited the Asia Society while on a US tour in 1985. Their friendship has continued since then.

Ms Gordon talked about the difficulties in drafting the Constitution and the necessity of empowering women on Thursday, May 6, 1999.

"A special lecture was given at a hotel in Kagoshima by Beate Sirota Gordon who was deeply involved in the drafting of the Article 24 of the Constitution. The former GHQ official spoke about the difficulties in incorporating rights appropriate for Japanese women in the Constitution. She was 22 years old at that time. The speech, entitled "Sexual Equality I wrote in the Constitution," was given in her fluent Japanese on Thursday, May 6, 1999.
Ms Gordon is visiting Japan at the invitation of international exchange organizations. The first lecture in Kagoshima by the New Yorker was hosted by International Culture Exchange Association, "TEN." About 900 people enjoyed the address."--Yomiuri Shimbun, May 8, 1999
