Japanese researchers say a method of delivering oxygen through the rectums of animals has proved successful in combating respiratory failure.

The researchers conducted experiments on mice, rats, and pigs that involved infusing an oxygen-rich liquid into their rectums.

They say oxygen levels in the animals' bloodstreams increased significantly, suggesting the gas was absorbed through the intestines.
