Many people see space as the final frontier. But part of it is already littered with debris. And now a Japanese satellite is on a mission to demonstrate a way to tidy up.

The satellite launched into orbit from Kazakhstan on Monday. It's confirmed to be functioning properly.

Over 20,000 pieces of junk are believed to be orbiting the Earth. It's a growing problem that poses a danger to future space flights.

Officials at Japanese startup Astroscale say their cleanup satellite uses a magnetic device to trap debris. Both the junk and the satellite will then burn up when they re-enter Earth's atmosphere.

The mission will release mock debris, capture it, and also test technology to find debris. Astroscale says it's the first firm to conduct such an experiment. It plans to put the technology into commercial use.
