WESTERN COUNTRIES SANCTION CHINA OVER XINJIANG ABUSES

We start this hour with an intensifying dispute between the West and China. The European Union, the United States, Britain, and Canada are imposing sanctions on Chinese officials for human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
- この時間は、西側諸国と中国の間の激化している論争から始めましょう。ＥＵ＝ヨーロッパ連合、アメリカ、英国、カナダは、新疆ウイグル自治区における人権侵害の理由で中国当局者たちに制裁を科すことになります。
In a joint statement, the U.S., Britain, and Canada accused China of an extensive program of repression.

That includes restrictions on religious freedom, mass detention, and "the concerted destruction of Uyghur heritage."

"It's the largest mass detention of an ethnic or religious group since the Second World War. I believe one thing is clear: the international community cannot simply look the other way."

The EU had not imposed sanctions against China for more than three decades. The last time was an arms embargo, which the bloc imposed on Beijing following the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Beijing denies any human rights abuses. It says the moves by the EU are based on lies and disinformation.
