People in Switzerland have narrowly voted in favor of a proposal to ban full-face coverings in public.
- スイスの国民は、公共の場で顔全体を覆うものを禁止するという提案に、かろうじて賛成しました。
Official results from a referendum on Sunday show that 51.2 percent of voters supported the measure.Forty-eight point eight percent opposed it.

Local media say the move targets burqas and other coverings worn by Muslim women.

That is despite a survey showing that very few people in Switzerland wear such items. Muslims account for about five percent of the population.

Some have spoken out against the proposal. One group calls it a clear signal of exclusion to the Muslim minority.

Switzerland has also banned the building of minarets, a type of tower at mosques, after a referendum in 2009.

Similar restrictions have taken place in other European countries. France introduced legislation banning full-face and full-body coverings in 2011.
