The catch of Pacific saury or "sanma" plunged to record lows last year. The fish is one of Japan's most popular fall delicacies, and with diminishing numbers, prices have jumped.
- サンマの漁獲量が去年、記録的な不漁となりました。サンマは日本で最も人気のある秋の味覚のひとつで、漁獲量の減少に伴い、価格が急騰しました。
About 29,500 tons of Pacific saury were brought to ports across Japan during the main fishing season from August to December. That's down 27 percent from 2019, and the worst year since recordkeeping began in 1961.
- 約２万９,５００トンのサンマが、漁の最盛期である８月から１２月に、日本中の漁港に水揚げされました。これは２０１９年より２７%落ち込み、記録を取り始めた１９６１年以降、最も悪い年となりました。
The reduced catch saw the average wholesale price shoot up 50 percent from a year ago to about 47 dollars for 10 kilograms.

An industry group says the fish are declining in numbers, and fewer came into Japan's coastal waters last year.
