An ancient temple in Japan has revealed a centuries-old secret.
日本の古い寺院が、何世紀にもわたる秘密を明らかにしました。
Using special X-ray equipment, staff have uncovered traces of stunning images of Buddhist saints on a door at the World Heritage site.
特殊なＸ線機器を用いて、研究スタッフは世界遺産の扉の上に見事な菩薩画の痕跡を見つけました。
The huge door was made when the Byodoin temple was built nearly 1,000 years ago in Kyoto Prefecture.Temple officials and researchers began analyzing the wooden door two years ago.
この巨大な扉は、平等院が（今の）京都府に１,０００年近く前に建立されたときに造られました。平等院の関係者と研究者たちは、２年前にこの木製の扉の分析に着手しました。
They detected traces of pigment, including lead and copper, across its surface. Those formed the outlines of Buddhist saints flying on clouds.
扉の表面の至る所に、鉛や銅を含む顔料の痕跡を見つけました。その痕跡は、雲に乗って飛ぶ菩薩の輪郭を形づくっていました。
