Officials at the British Museum say they have acquired over 100 rediscovered drawings by the iconic 19th century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.
- 大英博物館によれば、１９世紀の日本を代表する芸術家である葛飾北斎による１００以上の再発見された絵画を収蔵したとのことです。
The museum says the 103 artworks surfaced in Paris last year after being forgotten for decades.

Hokusai is recognized worldwide for his woodblock print of a great wave off the Japanese coast.

The newly purchased artworks were previously owned by collector and jeweler Henri Vever.

They were put up for auction in 1948 and are believed to have been in a French private collection since then.

The museum says the drawings were created in 1829 as illustrations for an unpublished book.

It was widely believed Hokusai was not active at that time due to the death of his wife and because he had suffered a minor stroke.

The museum says the works show he was "in fact entering a new burst of creativity."

About two years after making the drawings, Hokusai began publishing his famous print series, "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji."
