Hong Kong police have arrested nine people under the territory's new national security law.
- 香港の警察は、香港で新たに施行された「香港国家安全維持法」に基づき、９人を逮捕しました。
This came less than 24 hours after the law came into effect, and on the same day Hong Kong marks its handover to China from British rule.

Hong Kong police say the first arrest came early Wednesday afternoon, when this man displayed an independence flag.

About 300 others were also arrested for unauthorized assembly, disorderly conduct, and other related offenses.

The day got off to a tumultuous start with protestors taking to the streets to voice their opposition to the law.

Beijing approved the new legislation on Tuesday.

It lays out four criminal acts it says endangers national security: secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign or external forces.

If convicted, people could face life in prison.
