JAPANESE LAWMAKER COUPLE ARRESTED

Japan's former Justice Minister Kawai Katsuyuki and his wife Kawai Anri have been arrested by prosecutors over an alleged violation of the election law.
- 日本の前の法務大臣の河井克行氏と妻の河井案里氏が、選挙法違反の疑いで検察に逮捕されました。
Both are lawmakers, formerly with the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
- ２人とも議員で、以前は主要与党の自由民主党に所属していました。
Prosecutors arrested the couple on Thursday and searched their offices.
- 検察は木曜日に夫妻を逮捕し、事務所を捜索しました。
Investigators say the former justice minister handed out about 220,000 dollars to about 90 local politicians and other individuals to secure votes for his wife.
- 特捜部は、前法務大臣は自分の妻の票を確保するため、約９０名の地元の政治家や個人におよそ２２万ドルを配ったとしています。
Anri ran in the Upper House election in July last year and won her seat.
- 案里氏は去年７月の参議院選挙に立候補し、議席を獲得しました。
Prosecutors allege she conspired with her husband and handed out an additional 16,000 dollars in cash to five people.
- 検察は、案里氏が夫と共謀し、５人に対してさらに現金で１万６,０００ドルを配ったと申し立てています。
After the election, the husband was appointed justice minister, but was forced to resign when the scandal broke in a weekly magazine last October.
- 選挙後、夫の克行氏は法務大臣に任命されましたが、去年１０月に週刊誌に買収疑惑が報じられ辞任に追い込まれました。
Katsuyuki reiterated on Wednesday he did not engage in any kind of shady political activities, nor did he do anything illegal.
- 克行氏は水曜日に、いかなるいかがわしい政治行動もしていないし、何も違法なことはしていないと繰り返し強調しました。
