mn 46 Jealousy (The House of Simon)
This painting represents an immediate cause of Jesus having been crucified.
First of all, let me explain why this painting's title is Jealousy.
The beginning is the story of Mary and Martha. Mary was jealous of Martha.
Because they were rivals in love for Jesus. First, when Jesus visits the sisters' home, Martha hurries to prepare their supper.
But Mary sits at the feet of Jesus to listen to him speak. So, Martha complains to Jesus.
But He tells Martha not to worry because Mary has made a wise choice." So, Mary won it at first.
Next, when Mary's brother Lazarus was dead, Martha said to Jesus, "I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."
Mary was able to do nothing but cry. So, second Mary lost to Martha. And she was more jealous of Martha. And she determined that she must settle it next.
So, she waited for the next chance. When she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,
and she took off all her clothes with silence, and she washed His feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head;
and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil which she had prepared for her wedding. Therefore, this ceremony was her wedding with Jesus in her heart.
So, she knew what was going to happen to Him in Jerusalem soon. But when Judas Iscariot saw her behavior, he was upset, complained, and said,
"Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" He hid his true mind behind that complaint. Because he loved Jesus.
But he was losing, and he was more jealous of her who gave Jesus everything. Judas Iscariot epitomizes the idea of the infamous betrayer who was against Jesus.
He was a serious, brilliant theoretician who was well-versed in the liberal policy. Meanwhile, Jesus taught the truth of love.
However, Judas behaved in real life to experience the power of money. Their difference in political concepts as well as the collision of Judas's strong love feelings lead to his betrayal.
So, He betrays Jesus for money in the end. An old man in the middle is Simon, who is a Pharisee, and asked Jesus to eat with him. He had respect for Jesus as a prophet.
But he is also a Pharisee. When Jesus came into Jerusalem, the Pharisees said among themselves," You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him."
He was jealous of Jesus too. Because Jesus was more popular than the Pharisees. The Pharisees could disguise their true nature, pretending to be pious while hiding greed.
Jesus scattered the pride in the imagination of their hearts. So, they condemned Jesus to death and delivered Him to Pilate of jealousy.
By the way, I must mention Jesus Himself. What would the Bible say about Him?
Exodus chapter 34 verse 14 says, For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
So, He is a jealous man in the Old Testament age indeed. However, The Gospel According to John said that for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
So, I must say He loves us forever. and teach you, in consequence, this Gospel.
Mark chapter 14 said " Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done good work for Me.
Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her."
So, I can state Jesus knew there was love behind jealousy.
