Package Design Now in Istanbul Expanding city of Istanbul, where 12 million people are living, has beautiful and exotic skyline indeed, with lots of Mosques and Palaces. On the contrary, in the center of the city, I found many modern scenes with people's vitality, instead of their historical landscape, as if it were the area of highly developed in Japan. "Packaging and Branding Event" was held at Marmara University and TUYAP Exhibition Site from October 12th to 19th, as one of the official programs of IIDE'98 (Istanbul International Design Encounters). This event consist of Material and Facilities Exhibition, Design Exhibition, Design Seminar and Design Workshop for the Packaging. 7 lecturers were invited from Great Britain, Israel, Austria, Japan and Turkey. They are the designers who are engaging in actual design scene and revealing many precious design stories about their countries. The workshop was organized under the theme of "Brand Identity", "Gift Package" and "Label Design", which I was responsible for. 40 students were participated in, who are very good at speaking English, operating computers and communicating each other, beyond my expectation. And moreover, I finally recognized that such many packages of drinks has been popular in city of Istanbul, where I could find a little cans at automatic venders but many at big shopping centers, besides many paper packs and pet bottles were found. And another things I was happy to find was that the works of students are fine and beautiful. " Excellent Works! May no more disciplines to obtain?". One of the professor said, whom I accompanied with. So did I feel indeed. At my work shop, 12 students were divided into 3 teams., in order to make better communication each other. It might make them feel fresh and easy to understand its own roles for each to proceed their project, deciding the leader immediately by themselves and starting works together. Through intimate exchanges of opinions and hot discussions on project, throughout three days, we finally reached to our conclusions to propose many. Some of the members stayed up all night through for finishing his works. I was so much impressed. The theme of the project was "Canned juice which you're eager to buy and drink". And project was done in good results, remaining many excellent ideas and proposals by them, in spite of such a short periods. It gives a light ,I am sure, for the future of the nation of Turkey. I am very lucky to find out that Turkish people still keep their spirit as "Go west". They started their history by going west from Mongolian plateaus of central Asia since 8 century. And finally they built great Ottoman Empire in 15 century. Now they have strong intention to participate in EC country members. Whole experience I had in Istanbul always reminds me of their kindness and tenderness. People lives there and dreams where to go, are sure to fulfill their dream through Package Design for the future. Good luck to my dear Istanbul! Thanks Mr. K.
