                       Showa Shinzan, Showa Volcano    May 17,1998

Showa Shinzan
DSC00090-w300.jpg (9984 バイト)Showa-Shinzan is a dome on the east of Usu volcano, and it is a newest volcano in Japan. Showa Shinzan was a surprise to Japanese.
A sudden big shock in the ground was happened around Mt.Usu in Dec.28, 1943 in the evening. This shock caused to bring out Showa-Shinzan and the new volcano was so active until 1945.





DSC00093-w300.jpg (11451 バイト)It is so surprise and unual phenomena that the eruption occurred in a flat barely field then made a volcano. And the local postmaster, Mr.Masao Mimatsu, placed a piece of paper on the development of volcano from the beginning and drew the profile of Showa-Shinzan as the dome grew.






DSC00100-w300.jpg (6876 バイト)By September of 1945, the lava was lifted up gradually   and  had grown 1,300 feet (407 m) above ground level.

The eruption caused no fatalities but the mudflows after the eruption
caused a several fatalities.
Steam is rising still from the dome.
Now the museum is located at the foot of the volcano and the documentation is displayed there.


昭和新山誕生
火山口もまったくなかった平坦な麦畑に突如、火山と出現したというのは世界でも非常に珍しい現象で、しかもその成長の記録がきめ細かく記録されてたことは世界でもはじめてのことです。1943年12月28日の有珠山周辺の地震で新山の活動を引き起こし、1945年9月までに標高407mまで溶岩丘は上昇成長し、その活動を停止しました。
なお、有珠山は今も活発に活動しており、1977年に大噴火しましたが、この
火山は約30年周期で噴火活動しています。
