Amorphous materials

Sol-gel process is my confident field to prepare new functionable glasses. Rare earth-doped glasses, proton-conducting glasses, nanoparticles-doped glasses, and self-assembling of metal nanoparticles have been developed. Splat quenching process of the melt is also good technique to obtain new glasses.

For detail, please refer next summary and page of research career.

New functionable glasses, Reaction of glass with gas

New glasses exhibiting extremely high gas permeability were prepared from alumino-silicate system.

Rare earth ions-doped glasses

Spectral hole-burning glasses

The sol-gel method was for the first time applied to prepare the spectral hole-burning glasses. The mechanism for hole formation was also discussed.

Glasses with optical nonlinearities

Glasses exhibiting second and third nonlinearities or enhanced-emission intensity were successfully prepared using the sol-gel method.

Proton-conducting glasses, fuel cell

We have succeeded to prepare glasses with high proton conductivity compared with that of Nafion membrane and to apply them to hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell.

Nanoparticles, Self-assembling

Size and shape-controlled metal nanoparticles of Au, Ag, Cu, Pt, Pd, Rh were prepaed using chemical process. The optical and catalytic properties have been discussed.

Sol-gel processing

Silica glass was prepared by heating the gel synthesized from metal alkoxide at around 800oC. Glasses with new composition such as ZrO2 (or Al2O3)-SiO2 binary system were also prepared using the sol-gel process.
