Rare earth ions-doped glasses
Spectral hole-burning glasses
The sol-gel method was for the first time applied to prepare the spectral hole-burning glasses.
The mechanism for hole formation was also discussed.

Sol-gel processing
Silica glass was prepared by heating the gel synthesized from metal alkoxide at around 800oC. Glasses with new composition such as ZrO
2 (or Al
2O
3)-SiO
2 binary system were also prepared using the sol-gel process.
