Debate
Takeshita:
As we've all seen over the past few years, working from home has gone from a temporary fix to a permanent shift for many businesses,
and I, for one, am a huge supporter of this change.
Tom:
I definitely agree that there’s been quite a bit of change — but I can't bring myself to embrace remote work completely.
If you're such a big supporter, let's hear why.
Convince me!
Takeshita:
Well, remote work isn't just about skipping the morning commute or staying in your pajamas all day.
It's about flexibility and productivity.
Tom:
Flexibility? Sure, I'll give you that. But I don't know about productivity.
Even if you do avoid your commute, it's impossible for me to imagine how the average person would be more productive at home or at a café.
I mean, you can basically do whatever you want whenever you want.
Takeshita:
When you work remotely, you're in control of your environment.
Whether you're a person who thrives in the morning or someone who hits their stride in the evening, remote work gives you the freedom to tailor your schedule around when you’re most productive.
Tom:
Not being bound by set work times has advantages, I suppose, but it depends on your line of work.
I used to teach at a university, and remote work there was a nightmare: all the class times were already set in stone, and was the content getting across to students? I doubt it — all we had were tired faces on computer screens and spotty audio. Remote work makes things way harder in some industries.
Takeshita:
Remote work allows for a much healthier work-life balance.
Instead of spending hours on the road or in a crowded train, you can invest that time in things that matter — family, personal projects, or even just taking a breather.
Tom:
I'll never say no to more family time.
You're totally right. But you might end up overcorrecting and overemphasizing the “life” side when everything is in your comfort zone.
And I'm probably not the only one who treasures some “alone time” on the train.
The way I see it, remote work is far from ideal.
I do better work when I put on my work clothes, get out of the house, and connect with people in person.
Those dynamic environments help create energy and bring ideas to life.
Takeshita:
To sum up my thoughts, I'm all for remote working.
I think it's a great option that empowers employees, boosts productivity, and helps create a more balanced life.
And as technology continues to advance, the opportunities for remote work will only grow. The future of work is changing.
