A new study says extreme rainfall events are happening more often in Japan, and climate change is mostly to blame.

It was led by a team of scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S.

They used artificial intelligence to take a deep look at precipitation data in Japan over a period of 38 years.

The study showed that the frequency of extreme rainfall events more than doubled in that time. It reached more than 12 days in 2015. That was up from six days in 1977.

The team also used a supercomputer to simulate atmospheric conditions and other natural variabilities.

It said the results showed that human-caused climate change was responsible for the rising frequency of abnormal rainfall.
