One of Australia's most beloved animals is falling closer to extinction.
- オーストラリアで最も愛される動物のひとつが、さらに絶滅寸前（の状態）に陥っています。
Government officials have declared the koala an endangered species across the country's east coast. They say climate change is largely to blame.
- 政府当局者は、オーストラリア東海岸全域においてのコアラを絶滅危惧種であると宣言しました。当局者は、主に気候変動が責めを負うべきであると述べています。
"I asked my scientific experts to really examine whether the koala's listing, as you said, on the endangered species list needed to move up a notch. And today's announcement is that it has, which is all about priority conservation for this extraordinary marsupial."

Environment Minister Sussan Ley says koalas are losing their habitat due to drought and massive bushfires that raged from 2019 to 2020. Infectious diseases are also spreading among the species.

Conservationists including the WWF say the population is estimated to have fallen by half in Queensland, and by 30 to 60 percent in New South Wales, over about 20 years through 2020.
