Turning now to Italy, where some people in the capital welcomed the new year by honoring an unusual tradition. They dived into freezing cold water.

Four individuals jumped off a bridge and into Rome's Tiber River. Hundreds of onlookers gathered to watch the spectacle.

The annual tradition dates back to 1946. But this year's event took place as coronavirus infections continue to surge in the country.

More than 140,000 new cases were confirmed across the nation on Saturday. A few participants expressed hope the coronavirus crisis will be brought under control in 2022.

A 68-year-old diver took part in the event for the 34th year in a row. He said he wants the pandemic to end. He also said he hopes people will be able to hug and kiss their loved ones again soon.
