Curators at the British Museum have unveiled rare drawings by one of Japan's most renowned artists. They're launching an exhibition celebrating woodblock master Katsushika Hokusai.
大英博物館の学芸員たちが、日本の最も有名な芸術家の１人による希少な絵を公開しました。彼らは木版画（浮世絵）の巨匠、葛飾北斎をたたえる展示会を開催します。
The museum gave a media preview on Tuesday of 103 drawings it acquired last year. The works are available for online viewing.
大英博物館は火曜日、去年入手した１０３点の絵の報道機関向け内覧会を行いました。これらの作品はオンラインで見ることができます。
The postcard-sized drawings are sketches for woodblock prints. The subjects are wide-ranging, from animals to plants and other natural phenomena, including landscapes.
はがき大の絵は、木版画用の下絵です。その題材は幅広く、動物に植物、そして風景を含む他の自然現象にまで及びます。
They were produced between the 1820s and 1840s for an illustrated book that was never published.
それらの作品は、１８２０年代から１８４０年代にかけて図鑑用に制作されましたが、図鑑は出版されませんでした。

"Hokusai has a blend of humor and also a sense of adventure, because these stories that he is in fact telling, really, in these drawings, are not part of standard encyclopedias. So this is Hokusai imagining the world."
