Thousands of people are fleeing Afghanistan, and Airbnb is stepping in to help. The home rental platform will provide temporary housing for 20,000 refugees.

The U.S.-based company says it will make lodgings available free worldwide.

It did not specify in Tuesday's announcement how long people would be able to use the accommodations. But U.S. media are reporting that long-term stays seem possible.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky took to Twitter to call the task of resettling Afghan refugees "one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time."

He says the company feels a responsibility to step up and that he hopes this inspires other business leaders to do the same.
