Scientists are training a new breed of helpers in the fight against the coronavirus. They're using dogs to detect disease in people who are infected.
- 科学者たちが、新型コロナウイルスとの闘いの中で新しい種類の助っ人を訓練しています。科学者たちは、犬を使って感染している人々の病気を見つけ出しています。
Researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine have teamed up with a group that trains dogs to sniff out diseases.
- ロンドン大学衛生・熱帯医学大学院の研究者たちは、病気を嗅ぎ分けるように犬を訓練する団体と協力しています。
In a first-stage trial last month, six showed a real knack for identifying the coronavirus from thousands of odor samples.
- 先月の初期段階の試みでは、６匹（の犬）が何千ものにおいのサンプルから新型コロナウイルスを特定する、本物の才能を示しました。
"What we found was that the dogs could detect correctly if somebody was infected with COVID 94 percent of the time. And what's really incredible about these dogs is that they can do it really, really quickly. And what we also found was that the dogs are able to detect people who didn't have any symptoms."

Similar studies are underway at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.

Dogs are also being used on a trial basis at an airport in Finland to identify people who require testing.
