We begin with a major development in the world of nuclear disarmament. A United Nations treaty banning atomic arms is coming into effect on Friday.

核軍縮の世界での重要な展開から始めます。核兵器を禁じる国連の条約が金曜日に発効します。

It is the first time under international law that these weapons will be deemed illegal, although key countries have yet to sign on.

主要国がまだ署名していないとはいえ、こうした兵器が違法だと見なされるのは、国際法の下では初めてのこととなります。

The UN nuclear ban treaty was adopted in 2017, but it took years to get the necessary 50 states to ratify it.

国連の核兵器禁止条約は２０１７年に採択されましたが、（条約発効に）必要な５０の国（と地域）に批准させるのに何年もかかりました。

The pact is the first legally binding international agreement to prohibit the development, possession, or use of nuclear weapons.

この条約は、核兵器の開発、保有、使用を禁じる法的拘束力のある初の国際協定です。

So far the world's nuclear powers have not joined the accord. Neither has Japan or other countries that fall under the U.S. nuclear umbrella.

これまでのところ、世界の核保有国はこの協定に参加していません。アメリカの核の傘の下にいる日本やその他の国々も参加していません。

Japan's government calls the agreement unrealistic, since it does not include any of the nuclear-armed states.

日本政府は、この協定を非現実的だと考えています。核保有国が１か国も含まれていないからです。
