A United Nations treaty banning nuclear weapons will go into effect next January after it was ratified by 50 nations.
- 国連の核兵器禁止条約が５０の国（と地域）によって批准され、来年１月に発効する予定です。
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted back in 2017, with the approval of 122 countries and territories.
- 核兵器禁止条約は遡って２０１７年に、１２２の国と地域の賛成で採択されました。
The treaty says the use of nuclear weapons violates international law covering armed conflicts, and bans their development, possession, and use.
- この条約は、核兵器の使用は武力紛争を対象とする国際法違反であり、核兵器の開発、保有、使用を禁じるとしています。
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement that the treaty's entering into force highlights the "catastrophic humanitarian consequences" of the use of nuclear weapons and added that the ratification is a step toward their total elimination.
- 国連のアントニオ・グテーレス事務総長は声明の中で、条約の発効は核兵器の使用がもたらす「人道上の破滅的な結果」を際立たせると述べ、さらにこの批准は核兵器廃絶に向かう一歩であると述べました。
However, the five major nuclear powers, including the U.S., Russia, and China, and countries such as Japan that fall under the U.S. nuclear umbrella, have not joined the treaty.
- しかし、アメリカ、ロシア、中国などの主要な核保有５か国、そしてアメリカの核の傘下にいる日本などの国は、この条約に参加していません。
Atomic bomb survivors have been calling for Japan and all countries to ratify the treaty and unite in efforts that will lead to the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
