The anonymous street artist Banksy has funded a lifeboat to rescue migrants heading for Europe.

The ship is already operating in the Mediterranean, where a number of refugees and migrants from Africa and the Middle East have lost their lives.

Banksy said on Instagram that a former French naval vessel has been converted into a lifeboat.

Britain's Guardian newspaper says Banksy contacted a woman involved in rescuing people. He told her the money he made from his work about the migrant crisis could be used to buy a boat.

The Louise Michel had reportedly rescued 219 migrants, including children, by Friday.
