U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have spoken face-to-face for the first time in a year.

"To keep the lines of communication open, including between President Xi and me, he and I agreed that either one of us could pick up the phone, call directly, and we'd be heard immediately."
Biden also said he stressed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He added that the U.S. remains committed to the One China policy.
"As the most important bilateral relationship in the world, China and the U.S. should develop in a way that benefits our two peoples and fulfills our responsibility for human progress."
