Japanese researchers have shed more light on one of the most high-profile archaeological cases of the past century.

They say a mysterious dagger found in the tomb of the Egyptian boy-king Tutankhamun was likely a gift from another country.

The researchers from the Chiba Institute of Technology used chemical analysis to determine how and where the knife was probably made.

They found a plaster on the hilt similar to a type used in the Mitanni kingdom, near present-day Turkey.

They say this ties in with an ancient Egyptian record that says Mitanni gifted a dagger to Tutankhamun's grandfather.

Italian experts determined in 2016 that the knife is made of iron from a meteorite. The Japanese researchers say their analysis of the distribution of elements on the blade backs this up.
