The city of Jerusalem has dedicated a square in memory of a late Japanese diplomat who saved thousands of Jews during World War II.
エルサレム市は、第２次世界大戦中に何千人ものユダヤ人を救った亡き日本人外交官を記念して、（市内の）広場をささげることにしました。
Sugihara Chiune worked at the Japanese consulate in Lithuania. He defied orders and issued transit visas to refugees fleeing persecution by Nazi Germany. His actions are said to have saved about 6,000 Jews.
杉原千畝はリトアニアの日本領事館で働いていました。彼は命令に逆らい、ナチス・ドイツによる迫害から逃れてきた難民に通過ビザを発給しました。彼の行動は、およそ６,０００人のユダヤ人を救ったと言われています。
Some of those who owe their lives to Sugihara paid tribute to him on Monday. They and their families helped dedicate Chiune Sugihara Square.
杉原に命を救われた人たちの一部が、月曜日に杉原に敬意を表しました。彼らやその家族たちは、「チウネ・スギハラ広場」を記念する式典に出席しました。
Sugihara's son Nobuki was also there. He said his father wasn't trying to do a "great thing," he just wanted to help people.
杉原の息子の伸生さんもそこに参加しました。伸生さんは、父親は「偉大なこと」をしようとしていたのではなく、人を助けたかっただけだったと述べました。

"He thought, two or three people could succeed, then it's a miracle. But real miracle, he didn't know, now, few hundred thousand survivors' descendants are all over the world."
