Researchers in Poland say they have discovered for the first time an Egyptian mummy of a pregnant woman.

The team of researchers examined a mummy that was taken to Poland in the 19th century. It's now kept at the National Museum in Warsaw.

The mummy was thought to belong to a man – an Egyptian priest who lived 2,000 years ago.

That presumption was based on inscriptions found on the coffin.

But the team reported on April 29 that a CT scan revealed the mummy was that of a woman carrying a fetus.

They say the woman was thought to be in her 20s and was probably between 26 and 30 weeks pregnant.

The researchers plan to carry out further studies to understand why the mother and child were mummified together.
