The Japanese government says the economy saw a historic downturn in the April-to-June quarter.
- 日本政府は、4月から6月までの四半期に、経済が歴史的な落ち込みを記録したとしました。
GDP contracted by the most in 40 years as the coronavirus pandemic derailed the economy.

The Cabinet Office says GDP shrank at an annualized 27.8 percent from the previous quarter in real terms.

It was the biggest fall since comparable data became available in 1980.

Private consumption accounts for more than half of Japan's economy. It plunged by over eight percent as people stayed home and businesses closed their doors.
