ジャパンアドバタイザー「百人斬り競争」記事（百人斬り競争裁判東京地裁判決（部分－018））


オ　本件日日記事が掲載された直後，ジャパン・アドバタイザー紙には以下の記事が掲載された。
（ア）1937年（昭和12年）12月7日付けジャパン・アドバタイザー紙には，英文で，概略以下のとおり記載されている（甲48）。

「百人斬り競争の両少尉　接戦中
　日本軍が完全に南京を占領する前に，どちらが先に中国兵を白兵戦で斬るか，仲良く競争中の句容の片桐部隊，向井敏明少尉と野田毅少尉は今やまさに互角の勝負をしながら最後の段階に入っている。

　「朝日新聞」によれば，句容郊外で彼等の部隊が戦闘中であった日曜日の成績は，向井少尉８９人，野田少尉は７８人であった。」

（イ）1937年12月14日付けジャパン・アドバタイザー紙には，英文で，概略以下のとおり記載されている（甲49）。
「百人斬り競争　両者目標達成で延長戦

　向井敏明少尉と野田厳少尉の，日本刀で百人の中国兵をどちらが先に殺すかという競争は勝負がつかなかった，と日日新聞が南京郊外の紫金山麓から報じている。向井は106人，競争相手は105人を斬ったが，どちらが先に100人を斬ったかは決められなかった。二人は議論で決着をつける代わりに，目標を５０人増やすことにした。

　向井の刀はわずかに刃こぼれしたが，それは中国兵を兜もろとも真っ二つに斬ったからだと彼は説明した。競争は"愉快"で，二人とも相手が目標を達成したことを知らずに100人を達成できたことは結構なことだと思う，と言った。

　土曜日の早朝，日日新聞の記者が孫文の墓を見下ろす地点で向井少尉にインタビューしていると，別の部隊が中国軍を追っ払おうとして紫金山の山麓めがけて砲撃してきた。その攻撃で向井少尉と野田少尉もいぶし出されたが，砲弾が頭上を飛び過ぎる間，呑気にかまえて眺めていた。"この刀を肩に担いでいる間は，一発の弾も私には当たりませんよ。"と彼は自信満々に説明した。」

Sub-lieutenant Toshiaki Mukai and Sub-lieutenant Takeshi [Tsuyoshi] Noda, both of the Katagiri unit at Kuyung, in a friendly contest to see which of them will first fell 100 Chinese in individual sword combat before the Japanese forces completely occupy Nanking, are well in the final phase of their race, running almost neck to neck. On Sunday when their unit was fighting outside Kuyung, the score, "according to the Asahi[Tokyo Nichinichi],was Mukai 89,Noda78.

[14 December 1937] The winner of the competition between Sub-lieutenants Toshiaki Mukai and Iwao [Tsuyoshi]Noda to see who would be the first to kill 100 Chinese with his Yamato sword has not been decided,
the [Tokyo] Nichinichi reports from the slopes of Purole Mountain [Tzu-chinshan], outside Nanking. Mukai has a score of 106 and his rival has dispatched 105 men. but the two have found it impossible to determine which passed the 100 mark first. Instead of settling it with a discussion, they are going to extend the goal by 50. Mukai's blade was slightly damaged in the competition. He explained that this was the result of cutting a Chinese in half, helmet and all. The contest was “fun," he declared. and he thought it a good thing that both men had gone over the 100 mark without knowing that the other had done so. Early Saturday morning, when the Nchinichi man interviewed the sub-lieutenant at ａ point overlooking Dr. Sun Yat-sen's tomb. another Japanese unit set fire to the slopes of Purple Mountain in an attempt to drive out the Chinese troops. The action also smoked out Mukai and his unit, and the men stood idly by while bullets passed overhead. "Not a shot hits me while I am holding this sword on my shoulder," he explained confidently.

　これらの記事は，後に英国マンチェスター・ガーディアン紙の記者であったH.J.ティンパレーにより "WHAT　WAR　MEANS：The　Japanese　Terror　in　China"（中国語訳では「日軍暴行紀実」。以下「日軍暴行紀実」という。）の中で「南京"殺人競争"」として紹介された（甲50）。 　なお，「曾虚白自傳」によれば，ティンパレーは，国民党国際宣伝処が，日本軍の南京における大虐殺について国際宣伝を行うに際し，米国のスマイス教授とともに協力を仰いだ人物とされ，ティンパレーについては，国際宣伝処の駐米宣伝の覆面の責任者となったとされている。同人は，後に国民党中央宣伝部顧問に就任している（甲53,54,90）。
