イギリスのコミックオペラ界で一世を風靡した作曲家サリヴァンは、意外とシェイクスピア好きらしく、たくさんの劇音楽を書いています。「テンペスト(1861)」「ヴェニスの商人(1871)」「ウィンザーの陽気な女房たち(1874)、「ヘンリー８世(1877)」、「マクベス(1888)」といったところ。これとは別に1886年、５曲からなるシェイクスピア歌曲集を書いています。１曲目の「オルフェウス」以外はほとんど今や取り上げられることはないような感がありますが、コミックオペラで鳴らした軽快なメロディは（４曲目の「柳の歌」さえも！）健在でなかなか楽しい聴きものになっています。２・３曲目などは他のどの作曲家のものよりも楽しい音楽ではないでしょうか。
第１曲は「ヘンリー８世」より。第２曲は「十二夜」、第３曲は「空騒ぎ」、そして第４曲は「オセロ」からです。５曲目がちょっと珍しいですが「お気に召すまま」の第３幕第２場、ロザリンドに惚れたオーランドーの書いた下手くそな愛の詩をロザリンドとその女友達のシーリアが読むシーンです。わざと下手に書いていますのでほとんど取り上げる作曲家はなかったところ、さすがサリヴァンの着眼点は違います。格調高くもユーモラスな歌が出来上がりました。

歌詞はここからお借りしてきて訳を付けていますので、繰り返しなども丁寧に付けられております。聴く時にはとても都合が良いと思いますが、そもそも聴ける機会がものすごく少ないのが難点です。
