1 誇り高きイアンの嘆き
|
Is it the old sorrow and the old grief? Or is it a new thing coming，a whirling leaf About the gray hair of me who am weary and blind? I know not what it is，but on the moor above the shore There is a stone which the purple nets of heather bind， And thereon is writ: She will return no more. O blown，whirling leaf，and the old grief， And wind crying to me who am old and blind! |
昔の悲しみか 昔の嘆きか？ あるいは新しく来たものか 渦巻く木の葉が 疲れて盲目のわしの白髪にまとわりつく？ わしにはそれが何かは分からぬ だが岸の上の荒れ地には 石が一つある ヒースの紫色の網が絡みつく その石の上には書いてある：彼女はもう戻らぬと おお吹かれて 渦巻く木の葉よ 昔の悲しみよ 老いて盲目のわしに叫びかける風よ！ |

バーバラ・ボニーのアメリカ＆イギリス歌曲集の録音“My name is Barbara”（Onyx)に３曲全部収録されています。アメリカの印象主義者と言われたグリフィスの音楽はなかなか繊細で興味深い歌曲となりました。フィオナ・マクラウドはスコットランドの詩人で、本吊は William Sharp (1885 - 1905) 。けっこう歌曲の詞にはなっている人のようです。かなり生々しい味わいの詩を書く人ですね。
