１８６２年南北戦争の戦線が膠着する中、戦争の死傷者が増大し北部の士気が低下してきたときに、エイブラハム・リンカーン大統領が志願兵による３０万人の増員を呼びかけたのに応じて、ジェームズ・スローン・ギボンズという人が書いた詩です。当時の多くの作曲家が曲を付けたのだそうですが、これに北部人として、またポピュラーソングライターとしてスティーブン・フォスターもまた作曲していました。まあキャンペーンソングですからあまりフォスターソング独特のしみじみした味わい深さは期待できませんが、歴史的な事実としてはちゃんと記憶に留めておく価値はあると思います。
Nonesuchレーベルにあるフォスター歌曲集の中で、レスリー・グゥインのバリトン独唱とコーラスで聴くことができます。「フォスターの夜会」というタイトルで今でも入手は容易ではないでしょうか。
このＣＤ、この他にも彼の南北戦争に絡む興味深い歌をいくつか収録していますので聴いてみる価値は高いです。
