Bid me discourse，I will enchant thine ear， Or，like a fairy，trip upon the green， Or，like a nymph，with long dishevell'd hair， Dance on the sands，and yet no footing seen: Love is a spirit all compact of fire， Not gross to sink，but light，and will aspire. ５４節からなる長大な物語詩「ヴィーナスとアドニス」の２５〜２９節 ほぼ中間部分を切り出してきて歌にしています。このあたりは延々と続くヴィーナスの台詞。美しい少年アドニスを見初めて言い寄っていることろですが、なかなか大胆な口説き文句ですね。シェイクスピアらしい際どいネタも交えてなかなか面白いです。
ビショップの曲はコロラトゥーラの技巧を散りばめた爽やかなもの。今やあまり歌われることはないようですがそれがとても惜しい愛らしい曲です。
