英語の詩がスラングっぽいので（しかも１９世紀の）意味が取れているかどうか自信がないのですが、この曲の詩、あのシャーロック・ホームズの作者アーサー・コナン･ドイルの手になる歌曲です。
イギリスというと、昔７つの海を支配するといわれた海の国、海のロマンを歌った歌やオペラも多くありますが、イギリス民謡のアレンジや、超絶技巧のピアノ編曲ものをたくさん遺し、今日本でも注目の（もうブームは去ったかも）パーシー･グレインジャーにもこんな作品があったのですね。
彼の作品、歌曲は全部で７０曲近くあるそうですが、そのほとんどが民謡の編曲で、オリジナル作品は１０数曲しかないようです。その意味ではこれも貴重なオリジナルなのですが、いつ民謡になってもおかしくないようなテイストの歌です。水夫の鼻歌を模したような歌ですから、覚えやすいリフレインが繰り返し繰り返し現れ（Ho! the bully rover Jack， Waiting with his yard aback， Out upon the lowland sea!)、甲板のモップ掛けでもしながら歌っているような雰囲気がなかなか良く出ています。
グレインジャーの歌曲は、Chandosからリリースのグレインジャーエディションの中で、バリトン・ソプラノｅｔｃ．と声の質毎に分けて録音されていますが、これはバリトン編、Varcoeの歌で収録されています。
