O wild West Wind， Make me thy lyre，even as the forest is: What if my leaves are falling like its own! The tumult of thy mighty harmonies Will take from both a deep，autumnal tone， Sweet though in sadness. Be thou，Spirit fierce， My spirit! Be thou me，impetuous one! Drive my dead thoughts over the universe Like withered leaves to quicken a new birth! And，by the incantation of this verse， Scatter，as from an unextinguished hearth Ashes and sparks，my words among mankind! Be through my lips to unawakened earth The trumpet of a prophecy! O，Wind， If Winter comes，can Spring be far behind? |
おお 激しい西風よ 私をお前の竪琴にしておくれ あの森のような たとえ私の木の葉が散ろうと あの葉のように お前の力強いハーモニーの騒乱が 両方から引き出すのだ 深い秋の響きを 甘い響きを 悲しみのうちにあっても お前はなれ 激しき精霊よ わが精神に！お前は私になれ 激烈なる者よ！ 駆り立てよ わが死せる思考を宇宙へと 枯葉のように 急がせるために 新たな誕生を！ そしてこの詩の呪文によって 撒き散らせ まだ消えていない暖炉からの 灰や火花のように 私の言葉を人々の間に！ なってくれ 私の唇を通して目覚めぬ大地への 予言の喇叭に！おお風よ 冬が来ようとも 春ははるかに遠いことがあろうか？ |
最後のフレーズが「冬来たりなば 春遠からじ」として日本でも良く知られたフレーズになっています。５節からなる長い詩ですが、エルガーは最後の５節目のみを取り上げて混声の合唱曲にしています。
