Analysis of current Japanese condition, in which due to the development of technology the love for fictional characters, does not much differ from the love for actual human being.

In contemporary field of Japanese society one can observe multiple interesting phenomenons occurrence. One of them is the fact of superiority of loving the ideal characters appearing in games, comics and animations, over the actual human being, considering the historical and cultural background. As an example of increasing number of people loving fictional individuals, I will try to prove my point in this matter with my knowledge and experience as a professional artist. Especially, explaining the separation of Japanese and other drawing styles, including factors like character's death and development presentation. Furthermore, there is a reference to the relation of existing religious resemblance and using the characters by religious groups.

If the technology keeps advancing, one certain thing is that fictional characters will carry on to influence the people's minds and their sense of reality.

Characters with no specific author, maintaining the overwhelming popularity are being centered around collection of huge amounts of money. General notions of copyright or artistic production are no longer proofs against consumerism.

It makes the boundary line of what is individual or public blurred. On the other side, the communication channel and media form their new shapes and there is even economical and political affection. Such characters may play significant role considering the reason of new image of religion. While the previously stated occurrence is representative only for Japan, I would like to discuss this matter and its possible spreading all over the other countries.

本論 Main

(Figure 00)

(Figure 01)

Figure 02)

Figure 03)

Figure 04)

(Figure 02)                                                (Figure 03)                                                (Figure 04)

(Figure 05)

(Figure 06)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaA2liN9LKM&list=FL3YO-Qz_xskO-czyAq9SKWA&index=93&feature=plpp_video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGt25mv4-2Q&list=FL3YO-Qz_xskO-czyAq9SKWA&index=23&feature=plpp_video

(Figure 07)

(Figure 08)                                     (Figure 09)

(Figure 10)

Ⅰ.   The soaking of the character appearing in 'Love Plus' game into real world.

In the present Japan, the new form of mangas and animation, which were produced till now, and its border cross over is benefiting in popularity. For example, let me explain this matter, taking into consideration the 'Love Plus' game.

'Love Plus' is a love stimulating game, which was exploited by Nintendo – DS in 2009.

In Japan, long before 'Love Plus' was introduced, this so called love stimulation category games have already existed, and its aim was to 'gain a lover'. If the player obtained such aim, the game was over. However, 'Love Plus', in the contrary, is about the continuation of matters after 'gaining a lover', which is taken as a start.

Due to appearance of 'Love Plus' game, instead of actually gaining the lover in real life, the number of people falling in love with artificial characters made its appearance as well. Let me show a short movie, explaining the actual use of such game.

(Figure 00)

The movie you just saw is an extract of a full version broadcast, shown in NHK channel in March 2010. What is more, in September 2010, there was a special event, that took place in the hot spring resort and gained an extreme measure of popularity in Japan. The 'Love Plus' fans could bring their favorite game characters, along with the possibility of staying in health resort's hotel with them, being considered as real customers. Also, the report of marriage with one of the fictional characters hit the broadcast number of 22 countries in total.

(Figure 01)

It is believed, that the structure of love making means choosing one person among others, but considering the 'Love Plus' game usage, choosing one character ties a large number of users in having the exact same lover, without being regarded as odd, towards the public sphere boundary and revolution of mental consciousness.

Ⅱ.   Reality and virtual world mixing cause consideration.

The popularity of Japanese manga in modern world take its obvious root in the Disney adaptation. After the World War II, big change was recorded, due to the creation of the first book by famous writer – Osamu Tezuka.

(Figure 02)

Beside the design, composition, panel layout and visual point guidance method, Japanese manga was shaped by the great influence of Disney animations and Hollywood movies. However, Ozawa succeeded in creating the characteristic for Japan manga style with no will of imitating any other existing form. It is considered as a main cause of  the international popularity gain of the Japanese manga.

The biggest distinction between American and Japanese style was the possibility of death of the appearing character. In Disney animation the death of the character was rather seldom. Even if the death of a villain took place in the long animation, its description was significantly limited, leaving the viewer with doubt if it actually happened.

(Figure 03)

However, Osamu Tezuka style of drawing contained the elements of character's death, making it fully exposed.

(Figure 04)

Considering the reason of such, the fact that Osamu has graduated from Medical School may be very important. Also, because of the fact that during the war, scenery that he experienced to see was full of death views could be considered as a writing willingness impulse. The experience of such surrounding, like seeing lots of dead bodies made him scattered and having a chance to study medical sciences he expressed how to deal with life and death in his work.

For characters, the fact of death could be paradoxically understood as living possibility, granting them with strong existence sensation.

In Hollywood movies, listed as highly viewed, the fact of death occurrence was already long ago considered unusual. However, Japanese manga characters have been changed as from Osamu's work was published. While drawing, when it came to death presentation, so called ' despite not being alive, characters behave as living ones' design was one of the main characteristic points of Japanese manga style.

Pictures or objects, without existence sense embedded are being felt as actually living beings, and it is not so complicated for Japanese to wrap one's mind around such impression.

Currently, many Japanese state for not being religious. Despite the fact that they do not belong to any specific religion, they pray for new year welfare in shrines, visit ancestors graves in summer, or celebrate Christians is often viewed critically.

However, this kind of Japanese mentality, from time immemorial can be seen in animism, which claims, that god is in everything, so it is faith of countless divinity.

In animism's philosophy, plants, stones, mountains or rivers are being considered as living nature, so their existence is present even in artificial paintings or carvings. Historically, Buddhism was major religion, but although it was a leading one, other beliefs were blended as one element of animism, but never considered as monotheism, characteristic for Christianity.

Such peculiar outlook on the world is being considered as a phenomenon for sympathy for drawing characters in death scenes, understood as their previously living opportunity.

III.   Possession of charisma visible among characters of Idol Master

As another example of previously presented phenomenon of Love Plus, let me introduce another game, known as Idol Master.

(Figure 05)

It is a game for Xbox 360, and it is about training those, who are soon about to become idols.

The point of training virtual girls may seem similar to Love Plus idea, however, the big difference between those two, is that characters are not being considered as personal lovers, but rather as public figures.

In Love Plus, basic rule is to train a character as player's lover, but even if those who chose the same character decided on meeting each other, every single player would have have a different girlfriend. Idol Master on the other hand, the awareness of training the same character is a very strong and obvious feature. So to speak, this kind of consciousness is the same for actual idol's fans.

In addition, currently, animation measuring cultural intercourse for virtual characters, together with ipads or tablets' spreading number is identically increasing.

In tablet applications, characters are behaving as they could communicate in the real way just by the interaction of one finger usage.

IV.   Manga on the crossroad

Because of the creation of many comic, games etc. Characters Japanese manga is now standing on the crossroad.

One of the Japanese manga representative magazine is weekly published Shonen Jump and the number of copies printed keeps on reducing since 1995. Speaking of the reason, 1995 is the year of releasing Windows 95 with internet connection facility.

Due to internet broadband making and portable terminal development, manga production did not consume such large sum of money, as for traditional paper drawings. The speed of creation was fastened as well,  not to mention duplication method establishment. This is why manga distribution system change is considered as a matter of course.

Manga presentation way had been developed for long period of time as suitable for books and magazines. Namely, turning on the pages was considered manufacturing as well. Tied with number of pages restriction and limitation, printing costs were also changed. However, considering the representation after internet enforcement, the most suitable presentation of traditional manga style meaning is disappearing. Previously mentioned 'page turning' activity has changed into web page scrolling. The fusion of animation and game industry accomplishment brings on the possibility of surpassing the popularity of manga into a new, changed way of expression.

In Japan, Love Plus or Idol Master games are experimental form of creating new communication method and making it into the products bring profits because of enthusiastic users and readers support.

Remote from traditional manga, animation or game business figures, there is well known Hatsune Miku, who from economical and cultural point of view is anything but ignored existence.

V.   Hatsune Miku's tremendous popularity

Released in 2007, Hatsune Miku is proud bearer of overwhelming popularity.

(Figure 06)

Until now, is was generally known that manga was a work of an individual and animation or game industry required corporation help in manufacturing. However, as it was shown in movie, computer performance improvement was made just by one person and the publishing factor was already arranged. This one was broadcasted in NHK Japanese Television in April 2010.

Music and animation work was not prepared by professional, but by admirer of this style. It was a beginning for such state, that is continuing till now.

In 2011, Toyota Motor North America Company used Hatsune Miku's figure for their commercial for Toyota Corolla. The animation and music for this CM was a work of amateur as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaA2liN9LKM&list=FL3YO-Qz_xskO-czyAq9SKWA&index=93&feature=plpp_video

Google Chrome used her figure in 2011 for commercial purpose as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGt25mv4-2Q&list=FL3YO-Qz_xskO-czyAq9SKWA&index=23&feature=plpp_video

Hatsune Miku's figure has already hit the point where just a hobby production does not count as it used to before. For 5 years since first release, there are numbers of products with her motive in Japanese convenience stores in almost every part of a country.

(Figure 07)

What is more, there is a statue of Hatsue Miku and its role model was Buddhist sculpture.

(Figure 08, 09)

This is a proof for forming a new kind of 'religion', because of Hatsune Miku's popularity, which is not weakening, due to her wild enthusiasts support.

VI.   Character's iconization

Idealized characters are not going to betray their users. In Love Communication games or Software Image Character case, the thing that makes it different from traditional manga or animation production is that there was no specific story involved at the beginning, which is necessary for creating such. It is easy to press the individual idea or delusion.

Affection for Love Plus or Idol Master, as well as Hatsune Miku is considered common. Until now, it was about omitting individual and public section and that is why is keeps on continuing so well. Both of these sections are concentrating on those not existing characters and supporting them mentally brings a thought of new religion formation kind.

Portable terminals, containing digital or virtual characters are easy to carry everywhere user wants to. That is why, the act of supporting them can be compared to carrying the pendant of Saint Mary or Kannon (Buddhist deity of mercy). So how exactly does this two matters differ?

The fact of keeping the religious factor can be related to taking advantage of such virtual characters by some of the religious groups and establishments.

Buddhist Temple, known as Ryōhō gained a lot of popularity, because of the promotion video uploaded on the Internet and its worshippers' number has rapidly spread.

Appearing characters were even produced as Buddhist statues and their makers actually called them that way.

(Figure 10)

This strange phenomenon, considered from the point of view of religion shows the dimension of growing disregard.

I would personally call this phenomenon 'the iconization of characters', because if its popularity assembled over the religious matter.

The reason of such is these characters, being at general art surface may be a sublimation of perfection, as if carrying the property of actual religious icons. Still, icons (considering computer icon factor) are being unlimitlessly accessible and the whole technology users are agreeing on relating it as a entrance with all the Internet usable facilities.

VII.   The possibility of icon appearance in countries other than Japan

As for Japan, the fact of characters changing their appearance into icons, as it was mention earlier, has the connection with animism as religious and cultural soil, because it is a country of highly developed art technique.

But beside Japan, is there no possibility for identical phenomenon appearance in other countries as well?

Hatsune Miku is already knows in America, because of the Toyota commercial and her fame is believed to spread even more, due to successful live concert in Los Angeles.

In such case, the shape of present media may gradually change. Due to the progress of conversion information flow to the electronic form, may improve the portable terminal's efficiency even more and symptoms of such change are being visible among manga production as well. The transmission route of information and shape of media is definitely changing.

It affects even economic and politic area.

What kind of mentality will the reliance and faith, growing thin because of the existing religions society system bring? One of the keys, needed to understand this matter is the iconization of characters.
