Taking1 | ƒnƒƒC‚ÖˆÚ–¯‚µ‚½‘c•ƒ•ê‚Ì‹L‰¯ F"Memories of My Immigrant Grandparents in Hawaii"iNelson) | |
@ | @ | Both of my grandfathers were born in Hawaii, my Chinese grandfatherfs mother was also born in Hawaii. Her parents went to San Francisco, on the way back to China they stopped off in Hawaii and my grandfatherfs mother was born there. I heard she was fluent in the Hawaiian language, having lived in Maunaloa with the Hawaiians, as well as Hakka. My Chinese grandfatherfs father was from Bo an, in Guangdong, he was studying to be a Chinese medicine doctor when his parents passed away. Being still quite young in his early teens he left his village went to Hong Kong and eventually learned English and to be a tailor. It seems he later heard that there was a lot of opportunity to be had in Hawaii and moved there. My Japanese grandfatherfs father was from Yamaguchi, he came to Hawaii to work for a sugar plantation on the Island of Kauai in Makaweli. Soon after my grandfather was born his mother apparently ran away with another man, his father sent him back to Yamaguchi to be raised with relatives. It seems they didnft take aliking to my granddad, and my granddad also had reciprocal feelings. I heard they treated him poorly, like an outsider. And grandpa was naughty, even urinating in the water barrel. Eventually they sent him back to Hawaii in his early teens. By that time, his father had a new wife that also didnft welcome him, and he was put to sleeping under the house on the dirt to be bitten by rats now and then. |

@ | @ | Dad would say things like / shut
your mouth / you catching flies / mong mong sung sung / daydreaming / you
couldnft space out / you couldnft slouch / how you hold your fork was a real
big deal / worthy of his infamous hakka scowl / his under breath growl /
contained anger / you knew a slap on the head was forthcoming / or maybe
even a full outburst of temper / rage / you couldnft cry / the more you cry
the more he hit you / take it like a man Dad used to love to drink and sing torch ballads / alla Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Alfred Apaka / standing next to the piano / smelling of aftershave / leather boots / fitted jeans / polo shirt tucked in / designer belt / fake Roland watch / combed hair / glass and cigarillo in hand / He told me of his escapades / after mom had her Japanese professor boyfriend / prime of his life / a German girl / another one in Eastern Canada / another one in Maine / several different ones in Hawaii / he knew the good cat houses / knew the mamasans / could get good deals for his out of town guests / he told me about the great service in Japan / a once in a life time must try / they feed you / bathe you / massage you / and by the time itfs time to c / you already have the biggest c / in your life / ready to burst He has old faded photographs of himself in Japan / after the war / in uniform / with fellow soldiers / standing by jeeps / with beautiful young Japanese girls He and my sansei Japanese voluptuous mom made me / married in December / born in June Spoke to him recently on the phone / told me I should move back to Hawaii / help out my son with his new life / check on him now and then to see if hefs still alive |
