European Union leaders have seen Ukrainian neighborhoods reduced to rubble.

Some have visited to walk through the ruins and hear the stories for themselves. Now they've granted Ukraine a coveted status.

EU leaders gathered to consider bids to join their bloc. They agreed to make Ukraine a candidate for membership along with neighboring Moldova.
