Kazakhstan's Interior Ministry is reporting nearly 8,000 people have so far been detained across the country.

The government has been cracking down on protests that started on January 2 against a fuel price increase.

The demonstrations have spread throughout the Central Asian nation, including the largest city of Almaty. The government is calling them acts of terrorism.

On Sunday, the office of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said those detained include a sizable number of foreign nationals, but gave no details.
