| コベントリー会の趣旨 コベントリーは人口約30万人のイギリスの都市です。第2次世界大戦中にドイツの爆撃を受け街の大部分が破壊されました。 爆撃直後から、コベントリーは､報復ではなく和解と平和を呼び掛けました。その後もかつての敵味方に関係なく、すべての国と手を取り合い世界平和のために取り組んできたのです。世界中の26の都市と姉妹都市提携をし、平和市長会議にもいち早く加盟しました。 「和解」の像は、コベントリー市の精神を象徴しています。この像はコベントリーの旧大聖堂の中に置かれています。その聖堂は爆撃で焼け落ち、現在は、外壁の一部と鐘撞き搭のみが残っています。その像と同じ物がコベントリー市民の心を伝えるため、広島平和公園国際会議場内に置かれています。しかし、残念ながらあまり知られていないようです。 毎年8月6日には新コベントリー大聖堂のチャペルでヒロシマ・デイの集いが開催されています。広島からはるか遠いコベントリー市で、ヒロシマ・ナガサキの悲劇を悼み、世界平和を祈る人たちがいるのです。 私たちはこのことに深く感動し、「和解で平和を作る」考え方に強く共感しています。私たちは、コベントリー市との草の根交流を通して、コベントリー市の「和解と平和」の精神を広めることを目的としてコベントリー会を立ち上げ、活動をしています。 設立 2006年7月25日 主な活動場所 広島市留学生会館 主な活動 ＊コベントリー市訪問 ＊コベントリー市からの来客受け入れ ＊コベントリー展(広島にて) ＊ヒロシマの被爆を伝える ＊平和のためにできること。 |
| The Aim of the Hiroshima Coventry Club Coventry is a city in England with the population of around 300, 000. During the Second World War much of the city was destroyed in the German blitz. Immediately after the devastation, Coventry called for peace and reconciliation rather than retaliation. Since the war Coventry has worked hand in hand with all countries, former enemies included, to build world peace. It has become the twin city of 26 other cities around the world. Coventry was the one of the first cities to join Mayors for Peace. The statue “Reconciliation” symbolizes the ‘spirit of Coventry’. This moving statue sits in Coventry’s Old Cathedral, burnt down during the blitz and of which now only the outer wall and the steeple remain. This statue has a twin in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, erected on behalf of the people of Coventry. Sad to say, not many are aware of this connection. On August 6th every year there is held a Hiroshima Day Service in the chapel of the New Cathedral. Far from Hiroshima, there are people who remember the tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and pray for peace in the world. We are deeply moved and identify strongly with ‘the spirit of Coventry’. We gather hoping to spread this spirit and to promote grass-roots cultural exchange with Coventry.
