2024年7月コベントリーからの手紙　　　July, 2024 A letter from Coventry

Sorry I have not been keeping you all in the loop about the ‘Peace Cranes' exhibition. Michell Dearden, Library Manager has been moving the exhibition around the various libraries and as you can see it has how been to Earlsdon, Foleshill, Bell Green and Caludon libraries. The library staff have all been very helpfull and have enjoyed having the display. I have asked if they require any help or extra books and they seem to be happy at the moment looking after the display. So I don’t think we need to bother too much about it, I think it is going to Stoke library next.

「平和の千羽鶴」展について、お知らせしていなくて申し訳ありません。図書館マネージャーのミシェルディアデンが、さまざまな図書館でこの展示を巡回しており、ご覧のとおり、アールズドン、フォールズヒル、ベルグリーン、カルドンの各図書館を巡回しています。図書館スタッフは皆、とても協力的で、展示を楽しんでいます。何かお手伝いや追加の本が必要かどうか尋ねたところ、今のところ展示の世話を喜んでいるようです。ですから、あまり心配する必要はないと思います。次はストーク図書館に行くことになると思います。

昨年１２月に広島の子どもたちが作った千羽鶴をコベントリーへ送りました。

その鶴が、佐々木禎子さんのお話とともにコベントリー中の図書館を巡回し、展示されています。

禎子さんは２才で被爆し、元気に育っていましたが、１２才で白血病になり亡くなりました。原爆投下から何年もたってから原爆による病気を発症しなくなった子どもたちがその頃はたくさんいました。

原爆の被害は、被爆したときだけでなく、体内へ入り込んだ放射性物質が被爆者の体を長い時間をかけてずっとむしばみ続けるのです。そのため就職ができない人や、生活に困る人、原爆による病気で苦しみ続ける人、、結婚差別を受ける人、、、、等など、原爆は被爆者を一生に渡って苦しませ続けてきました。それらを全て含む被爆の実態を世界の人に、次世代の人に是非知っておいてほしいと思います。

原爆は戦争に関わっていない多くの市民や子どもたちを犠牲にしました。原爆使用は許されることではありません。どんな理由があろうと、どんな事情があろうと、使ってはいけないものです。
原爆使用に正当な理由はあり得ません。　核兵器禁止条約を核保有国も認め守っていかなくてはなりません。

もちろん使ってはいけないのは核兵器だけではありません。毒ガスも細菌も化学兵器もです。そしてAIも、戦争のために使われるべきではありません。

日本は核兵器禁止条約に早く参加してほしいし、一方で、第二次世界大戦中、戦争捕虜の過酷な待遇も含む、いろいろな国際法違反をしていたことを認め反省し、二度と繰り返さない決心をしなくてはいけません。

Last December, a thousand paper cranes made by children in Hiroshima were sent to Coventry.
The cranes, along with the story of Sadako Sasaki, are being exhibited and travelling around libraries in Coventry.
Sadako was exposed to the atomic bomb at the age of two, and grew up healthy, but at the age of 12 she developed leukemia and died. Many years after the bombing, many children at that time developed illnesses caused by the atomic bomb and died.
The damage caused by the atomic bomb does not only occur at the time of exposure, but the radioactive materials that entered the body continue to eat away at the body of the victim over a long period of time. As a result, some people were unable to find employment, some had difficulty making a living, some continued to suffer from illnesses caused by the atomic bomb, some suffered discrimination in marriage, etc. The atomic bomb has continued to cause suffering to the survivors for the rest of their lives. I would like the world and the next generation to know the reality of the atomic bombing, including all of these facts.

The atomic bomb sacrificed many citizens and children who were not involved in the war. The use of atomic bombs is not permissible. No matter what the reason or circumstances, they should not be used.
There is no justification for using atomic bombs. Nuclear-weapon states must also recognize and abide by the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Of course, it is not just nuclear weapons that should not be used. Poison gas, bacterial, or chemical weapons should also not be used. And AI should not be used for war.

I hope Japan will join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as soon as possible, but at the same time, it must acknowledge and reflect on the various violations of international law that it committed during World War II, including the harsh treatment of prisoners of war, and resolve never to repeat them.
