このトキオの町には リトル・ゲイシャ・ガールズや高い身分の娘らだ ジャパンには娘がいる どんな男でも屈服させることのできる - だがお前が わが愛しの人よ 私にとっては十分だ！ おおアーモンドの白い花よ 私を喜びで震えさせてくれ だがその香りは少しも甘くはない お前の吐息ほどには 何もないのだ お前のキスほどのことは 小さなドレスデンの磁器よ - 娘よ お前を愛してる お前を愛してる お前を愛してるよ 死ぬまで！ |
かわいいジャパニーズガール、ヨーさんに寄せる愛の歌５篇、どこか稚拙な感じの詩なのは詩人の能力不足というよりは、そのようにわざと書いたのでしょう。そういう意味ではどこか悪意のようなものも感じるのですが、まあこの少々ズレたオリエンタリズムも大人の余裕で楽しみましょう。詞を書いたチャールズ・ハンソン・タウンはニューヨークの生まれで、日本にはあまり縁がなさそうな感じの略歴の人でした。音となって聴けるのはまず不可能だとは思いますが、IMSLPに楽譜がアップされていたのを興味深く見せて頂きました。
彼女の代表作のインドの歌同様、ほのかな東洋風のキッチュさが感じられるところもあるものの、基本はガチガチのイギリス歌曲です。
