イギリス近代の作曲家はみな、シェイクスピアの劇中歌にとろけるような美しいメロディをつけていますが、これはそのはしりと言える作品集でしょうか。他の多くは1920年代以降なのですが、このコーツの作品は1909年と少し古いです。メロディはしかしながら後の傑作群に引けを取ることなく皆美しく主張しています。中でも競合の少ない“Who is Silvia？”が出色でしょうか。あまりに優美過ぎるといえばその通りですが、この魅力には抗いがたいものがあります。
