パットが丘の上にやって来たとき 愛しの美人に会うために 彼の口笛はそっと だが鋭く響き渡った その合図がこんなことになったのだ 「メアリーや」と母が言った 「誰かが口笛を吹いてるんじゃないかい」 メアリーは言った 「あれはただの風よ 鳴ってるんだわ ドアをすり抜けて」と 「あたしゃ長いこと生きてきたけど メアリー この広い世界でね いとし子や だけどドアがあんな風にピューピューなるのは 聞いたためしがないよ」 「だけどお母さん フィドルを知ってるでしょ 戸の隙間のそばに掛かってる それで風が 弦の上を撫でて 鳴らして行ってるんだと思うわ」 「メアリーや あたしゃ聞こえるよ 豚が 不安そうに鳴いてるのが」 「だけど母さん ねえ よく言うじゃない 豚は風を見ることができるって」 「そりゃ本当だろうさ 昔はね だけどあたしゃ思うよ お前も言っていいんじゃないか 豚にせよ あたしたちにせよ 暗闇の中じゃ何も見えないってことをね 犬が今吠えてるよ フィドルがあんな音を出せるはずがないだろう」 「だけど母さん 犬って吠えるものでしょう 月を見るたびに」 「だけどどうやって月を見ることができたんだい だって知ってるだろ あの犬は目が見えないんだよ？ 目の見えない犬が月に吠えるこたあないし どんなフィドルも風で鳴るわきゃあないだろうよ あたしゃあお前たちが思ってるほどバカじゃないのさ よく分かってるさ ありゃパットだ 口をつぐみな 口笛吹くコソ泥め 家に帰るんだよ ここから出てって さっさとあんたのベッドに帰んな 吹き鳴らすんじゃないよ ここであんたのおふざけを あたしゃ目はよく見えなくなったけどね 耳はまだ達者なんだよ！」 |
