The lads in their hundreds to Ludlow come in for the fair， There's men from the barn and the forge and the mill and the fold， The lads for the girls and the lads for the liquor are there， And there with the rest are the lads that will never be old. There's chaps from the town and the field and the till and the cart， And many to count are the stalwart，and many the brave， And many the handsome of face and the handsome of heart， And few that will carry their looks or their truth to the grave. 市場目指してラドロウにやってくる何百人の若者たち 納屋から、鍛冶場から、水車小屋から、羊小屋から来た者もいる 女を追いかける若者や、酒を求める若者もいる そして中には、決して歳をとらない若者もいる 町から、野から、畑から、馬車からやってきたやつらには 丈夫なやつも多ければ、勇敢なやつも多い 顔が美形なのも多いし、心意気がいいやつも多い でも、墓に入るまでその姿や心意気を保つやつはほとんどいない もしそんなやつらを見分けられたらいいのに 見分ける印があればいいのに 今は見つけることのできない、そんな恵まれたやつらを それができたら、友になれる それができたら お別れができる 二度と戻らぬ旅路に出る彼らを見送ることができるのに だが今は思いのままに眺めても 誰をも見つけるすべはない きみの肘の先をかすめ、気付かれることも話しかけられることもなく 彼らは輝いたまま、また人生を輝かせる再生工場へと戻っていくのだ そんな若者たちは栄光のうちに死に、そして決して老いることはない |
バターワースが詩集と同名の歌曲集の中に入れている端正なメロディのものが有名ですが、こちらはもっと激しい感情を昂らせていてバターワースのものとの差異に驚くばかりですが、こちらはこちらで詩の表現としては説得力があるように思えます。分厚い弦の響きが声を支えるのが印象的な曲です。
