有名なスーザの行進曲ですが、この曲には彼自身の手になる詩が付けられているのだそうです。口ずさめるように原詩も載せてみました（でもサザンオールスターズの歌みたいに字余りが多いので難しい。後から詩を付けたからでしょう）。詩の出来は曲ほどは良くないように思えるのですけれども、メロディが素晴らしいだけに結構映えます。
アメリカの自由と民主主義を信じる強い意志が伝わって来るキーワードがふんだんに散りばめられ、ちょっと異国人には勘弁して欲しいと思えるところが違和感の原因なのでしょうが、このスピリットこそがアメリカなのだろうなあとちょっと感心してしまいました。
Premierというレーベルから、このスーザの歌曲集というのが出ていて、この「星条旗」はアルバムの最後を飾る曲です。
ソプラノのGuyerとバリトンのWillsonのデュエットなのですが、面白いのはマーチのあの有名な中間部、主旋律にピッコロの対旋律がまとわりつくところを、主部をバリトンが、対旋律をソプラノがスキャットで歌うというところです。なんだか２人共とても楽しそうに歌っているのがご愛敬です。
スーザという人は、あの膨大な数のマーチばかりでなく、舞台音楽やオペレッタなどもかなり作曲しているのだそうで、このＣＤはそんな彼の側面にも光を当ててくれる興味深いアルバムだと思います。
