悲しみに浸り込むようなソロ２曲のあとは、ほのかにユーモアも湛えている合唱の歌声が入ります。春の訪れを素直に喜んでいる詩（ダウソンの原詩タイトルは「春に In spring」です）はしかし、最後の２行で詩人の悲しみに引き戻されます。この部分はふたりの独唱者がそれぞれ合唱を引き継いで歌っています。
